Australia’s well-known Sydney Silky Terrier breed evolved from the Yorkshire Terrier. Yetholme Yorkies evolved from my much-loved companion dog Penny - a Sydney Silky.

In the early 1980’s I was breeding and showing Arabian horses and Welsh Mountain Ponies. Penny was my pet and my friend. She went everywhere with me - even to horse shows. One day, at a show in Sydney, a lady began following me around and, eventually, came up and asked if my dog was a Yorkshire Terrier. She said she was a breeder of Yorkies and admired Penny’s beautiful, silky, full-length coat.

At that time, in 1984, I’d never heard of Yorkshire Terriers, but I thought if they were as lovely as Penny I should check them out.

Not knowing any better at the time, I simply started watching the ‘Pets For Sale’ classifieds in the Sydney newspapers. Before long, some Yorkie puppies were advertised and they were located in a country town just 160km from me. I rang the breeder and she offered to bring a female for me to look at.

I can’t say I was impressed when a tiny scruffy black and tan ragamuffin was presented to me. She didn’t look a bit like my gloriously silver and silky Penny!

But I DID purchase her. Her name was Molly. Anyetta Molly Lass.

She had amber eyes, dropped ears and an even bite! However, her scruffy black and tan did eventually become a silky-textured dark steel blue with lovely shaded tan.

Molly was the beginning of Yetholme Yorkies.

She was never shown because I knew nothing about dog shows. But I did breed from her. From an early litter I kept a daughter, Yetholme Weeny One, who became my first show dog and my first Australian Champion.
Weeny introduced me to showing and from then on I was addicted - to Yorkies and improving my Yorkies.

When it came time to breed Weeny I’d studied the Yorkie standard and was looking for a dog which could improve on her. A level topline and good movement were primary requirements. I couldn’t find a dog which met the standards I’d set for myself in these respects until I saw Ch Deebees Dionysius (imp UK) at an interstate show.

Dionysius was imported and owned by Malcolm and Linda Shaw of the successful Karojenbe Stud in Queensland.

He was the mate I was looking for for Weeny. A truly magnificent dog - dead straight topline and masses of blue coat. I didn’t know that he wasn’t available at public stud, so I approached Malcolm and Linda to arrange a service. My request took them by surprise but they agreed. And the result was a glorious litter for Weeny and an enduring friendship and eventual partnership between the Shaws and I.

By the time Weeny’s first litter was born I was well and truly bitten by the Yorkie bug. I love the dogs and I love breeding and showing them. I love the challenge of improving on my stock. And I especially love knowing that, all round the world, there are Yetholme Yorkies that are treasured companions - true family members.

Penny??

Yorkie No. 1 for me - Molly. She lives on in Yetholme Yorkies through several descendants.

Molly??

Yetholme Weeny One, YetholmeYorkies first show dog and first Australian Champion.

Mandy & Hugo (far left and left).
Officially, Yetholme Mandela and Yetholme Hi Falutin - litter sister and brother to Yetholme Weeny One.

Mandy and Hugo began their own Yorkie dynasty, although neither were ever bred.

They followed one of Molly’s first pups, Chuckles, into the life of my friend (and website builder) Chris Haigh.

Nearly 14 years down the track, Mandy and Chuckles have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, but Hugo is still the grand old man in a much-loved family of six ‘Yorkshire Terrorists’.

I’m trying to convince Chris to write the ‘Tale of The Terrorists’
