December. Jingle bells in the air. Parties are the way to go.

And for Yorkshire Terrier owners and lovers, what better way to enjoy a party than with a bunch of Yorkies and fellow devotees of the breed?

That was what my friend Di Murray of Dyella Yorkies (Dubbo) and I were thinking when we got together to plan and organise a Yorkie Yulefest. Invitations went out to the Yorkie set near and far and December 1 was the party date. The venue was a lovely picnic area beside the lake in the tiny NSW central tablelands village of Wallerawang.

Yorkies and their owners came from as far afield as Eden on the NSW south coast and Bellingen on the far north coast.  In all, 30 Yorkies and their owners donned their party clothes and joined in the fun.

When the invitations went out the request was for ‘all dogs on leads’.

Yetholme Yorkies’ webmaster, Chris Haigh, has six Yorkies, known affectionately (most of the time) as the ‘Bimbimbie Yorkshire Terrorists’.  Chris read the invitation, looked at the Terrorists ‘en masse’ and passed up on collars and leads. Instead she bought the ‘Puppy Playpen’.

The Terrorists were not impressed.

Nicholas The WonderPup was mightily offended. ‘For Heaven’s sake Mum, this is supposed to be a party, not a prison.’

The ‘Misses Yorkie Yulefest’ - 4yo Lilly McLelland of Bathurst, NSW and her Yorkie for the Day, Hesta (Ch YetholmeHeavns Blessing).

JillyPup, the youngest Terrorist, decided, ‘I’ll just sit here and look very, very forlorn and maybe someone will take pity on me and get me out of here.’

But Bimbimbie matriach Misty The Magnificent is never one for taking things lying down. She summed up the situation and announced, ‘C’mon guys, follow me. We’re outa here, now!’.

Having escaped the Puppy Prison, the next task for the Terrorists was to find new friends - some folks with spare laps and cuddles and others with spare tummy tickling capacity.

It didn’t take long! And along the way the Terrorists convinced a couple of other normally very well behaved Yorkies to join them in a bit of riotous romping.

With some difficulty, the Terrorists were eventually rounded up and returned to the Puppy Prison. They were kept under control by regular cuddles and frequent offerings of high quality barbecued sausages procured from Santa Chef Bob.

And then it was time for the Yorkie Yulefest Dog Show.

The Yulefest dog show gave a new twist to showring competition.

First class of the day was 'Most Loved Yorkie'. That stopped judge Yvonne Simpson in her tracks. Every Yorkie was 'Most Loved', so it was just a case of equal 1st place for all.

As always with Yorkies, there were several cases of 'instant love'. David and Des from Bellingen are currently without Yorkies of their own, but they were treated to love at first sight by members of Chris and David's band of six 'Bimbimbie Yorkshire Terrorists'.  Four year old Lilly McClelland, daughter of Bathurst vet Dr Tom, was loved for the day by Hesta (Jan Clarke's Ch Yetholme Heavns Blessing) and Kerri-Lyn Ottaway spent the day bonding with Wilma (Ch Yetholme Wild Mink) before taking her home to start their new life together.

So sorry, but we lost the photo of Kel and Marika with Most Loved Yorkie Maxie.
Our Eden partygoers.
Ken and Marika, please send a Maxie pic soon. This space is your space.

Valda Goodwin’s Yorkie trading table was packed with goodies, from yummy Yorkie Puddings (steamed Xmas puddings), through lots of Yorkie clothing and accessories, to Yorkie branded mugs, plates, ornaments and jewellery.

Throughout the day there were several interesting and helpful 'how to' sessions.

Dr Tom gave a simple but very informative talk on dental hygiene and the importance of proper teeth care. Di Murray gave a demonstration of Yorkie grooming techniques, both for showring formal occasions and more casual leisure wear. Winner of the shaggiest coat show class, Chris and David's 'The Archbishop' (Ch Yetholme Touch Of Desire), declined the chance to be the demonstration model - he wasn't prepared to give up his class winning 'shaggy' for formal elegance.

Pam Lui’s obedience training session was watched with amusement and bemusement by some of the Yorkie party goers and there was a small cheer from the Bimbimbie Yorkshire Terrorists' camp when Pam’s demonstration Yorkie 'Strawberry' decided, in typical Yorkie fashion, to pass on 'fetch' and go for a run and a bit of an explore instead.

As the afternoon came to a close all the Yorkies (and their owners) agreed that the 2002 Yorkie Yulefest would be the first of many. We're already planning the 2003 party.

Competition in the Yulefest Dog Show hotted up after the Most Loved class. There were classes for the smallest Yorkie, and the largest; the biggest beer belly, the prettiest face, the shaggiest coat; the waggiest tail, kissiest tongue and the biggest ears. First prize for Yorkie Most Like Its Owner went to Hesta (borrowed for the event) and Dr Tom, an all-round popular choice.

After the excitement of all that showring competition it was time for lunch and lots of chat among owners and dogs alike. And because Yorkies are such friendly folk, the two guest Papillons and the cutest Maltese pup were welcomed as family.

The Yulefest will most definitely be on again in 2003. We’ll let you know date, time and place must closer to theevent.

In the meantimeto all our Yorkie friends around the world, please enjoy your 2002 Yuletide. And please share your festive season photos with us.
